The original Vauxhall Viva was one of the most popular British cars of the 1960s and 1970s, with more than 1.5 million sold. The Viva name has found a worthy successor in the manufacturer’s new city car, which replicates the eager performance and capable driving dynamics of the classic original and adds a generous helping of modern driver-convenience technology.
The five-door Viva is just 3.86 metres long and 1876mm wide – making it extraordinarily compact and manoeuvrable in restricted spaces like congested car parks and residential roads packed with parked vehicles. From an aesthetic point of view the large headlights and steep bonnet, as well as the single chrome bar of the grille and distinctive strakes of the side panels, ensure that the car has plenty of character. The pliant suspension results in excellent ride quality for passengers in the front or rear, making the spacious interior a relaxing and pleasant space even on lengthier journeys.
The Viva is powered by a naturally-aspirated 1.0 litre, three-cylinder Ecotec engine with 74bhp and maximum torque of 95Nm, linked to a smooth five-speed manual gearbox. As well as an accomplished performance, this unit will return admirable fuel efficiency of 62.8mpg; in the case of the SE ecoFLEX model this figure reaches 65.7mpg, whilst CO2 emissions are cut to just 99g/km, low enough to remove owners from Vehicle Excise Duty altogether. A particularly useful feature is “City Mode”, which weights the power steering for extra manoeuvrability and makes the Viva even more agile.
Aside from six airbags, the Viva’s standard safety equipment includes ABS, Electronic Stability Control, Traction Control and Hill Start Assist. A Lane Departure Warning system, which recognises when the vehicle moves out of lane markings at speeds above 35mph and sounds an audible warning, is an optional extra.
Electronic climate control, electronically-operated front windows, adjustable/heated door mirrors and cruise control are standard to all Viva models. A large, electronically-operated sunroof is also available as an optional extra, along with parking sensors, heated seats, the IntelliLink infotainment system, and a leather steering wheel.
