Since the turn of the year, it’s been hard to miss some of negative press coverage around diesel cars. The general sentiment being diesels are a bad choice and that most buyers should be looking to turn in their current vehicle for a petrol, electric or hybrid model before Government legislation hikes up ownership and running costs to eye watering levels.

However, despite all this doom and gloom, it’s still important to recognise that vehicle manufactures haven’t taken this lying down and have responded by investing heavily in cleaner more efficient diesel engine technology to meet these new regulations. Consequently, consumers need to know and feel reassured that a new diesel vehicle still has a place in a modern motoring society and as such should certainly feature as part of the buying decision.

Likewise, it should also be noted that in the current climate there are still some fundamental features and inexorable benefits to owning and running a diesel car…

1. Superior Fuel Economy and Range

Studies show that diesel cars typically provide 15-20% more miles per gallon than their petrol equivalents. And with this fuel efficiency comes some generous savings. And there really is no competition from electric vehicles either which can offer below as little as 20% the total range of a similar diesel model.

We compare the Miles Per Gallon and Range of a diesel, petrol and electric vehicle…

Diesel Vauxhall Astra Hatch 1.6L 5-Door

Miles per gallon - 78.5

Range - 829 miles

Petrol Honda Jazz 1.2L 5-Door

Miles per gallon - 55.4

Range - 492 miles

ElectricNissan Leaf 24kWh

Range - 124 miles on a full charge

2. Running Costs

When it comes to saving on running costs, there still has never been a better time to make your next car a diesel. The fact of the matter is this…

…diesel cars have superior fuel economy compared with their petrol counterparts.

Diesel cars can save drivers an average of well over 2p for every mile travelled (based on the current fuel prices (at May 2017) of 118.7p/litre for unleaded and 120.5 p/litre for diesel).

Vauxhall Astra 1.6L 5-Door: Retail £18,895.00

Fuel cost per 12,000 miles : £813 or £0.07 per mile

Selling price after three years at 10k miles = £7,558.00

Honda Jazz: Retail £13,955.00

Fuel cost per 12,000 miles : £1,311 or £0.11 per mile

Selling price after three years at 10k miles = £5,582.00

3. AdBlue and DPF Technology

Most manufacturers are now fitting modern diesel vehicles with AdBlue Technology and DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) as standard which reduce emissions and can improve environmental credentials and potential Road Tax savings. For example, a number of models in the Vauxhall range, including the Insignia and Cascada, now come with BlueInjection- the cutting-edge SCR diesel technology from Vauxhall that uses AdBlue®* technology to further reduce the level of nitric oxide and work towards cleaner emissions.

4. Fuel Technology

There’s further good news, particularly as far as the environment is concerned…

Cleaner, ultra-low sulphur diesel (ULSD) fuels now contain less sulphur - which has now become standard for on-highway nationwide.Using this ultra-low sulfur diesel (ULSD) immediately cuts soot emissions from diesel vehicles and equipment by 10 percent helping improve Road Tax savings.
