For this reason, we offer a great range of Motability Scheme adaptations to tailor your vehicle to your requirements, no matter how specific. We want to make sure all our customers are as mobile as possible, so we offer mechanical and accessibility adaptations to ensure that your car is always accessible to you and that you feel safe and in control.

At Baylis MG, we’re proud to support customers through the Motability Scheme, offering a wide range of vehicle adaptations to help make driving and travelling easier. Depending on your entitlement, many adaptations are available at no additional cost.

We can arrange a variety of driving adaptations, including assisted steering, foot steering systems, and hand controls for the accelerator and brake. Adapted foot controls and right-hand handbrake installations can also be fitted to make driving and parking more comfortable.

To improve access and visibility, options such as rotating seats and adapted mirrors are available. We can also help with mobility access solutions, including wheelchair ramps, hoists, tail-lifts and people lifts, making it easier and safer for you and your passengers to enter and exit the vehicle.

Boot Hoist

A boot hoist lifts and stores your wheelchair or scooter in your car’s boot. Tie-downs are included to help keep it secure during travel. The size and weight of your wheelchair or scooter will determine the type of hoist and space required, so bring it to the dealership to ensure the hoist and vehicle you choose are compatible.

Hand Controls

If using standard pedals for braking or accelerating is difficult, hand controls such as a push/pull device can help. This common adaptation lets you control the car’s speed with your hands by pushing the lever to brake and pulling it to accelerate.

Left Foot Accelerator

Foot pedal adaptations can help if you have difficulty using the standard accelerator or brake. These adaptations adjust the position or function of the pedals to suit your mobility needs, making driving safer and more comfortable. Several types are available depending on your requirements.

Remote Controls

Remote control devices make it easier to operate key car functions, such as indicators, windscreen wipers and headlights, from a single control panel mounted on the steering wheel. Some systems also include a steering aid, allowing you to steer and manage essential controls with one hand.

Rooftop Stowage

A car rooftop stowage unit could be a solution if you transport a manual wheelchair, and need to use your boot to store other items. They can usually be installed on either the passenger or driver side.

Steering Aids

If you find it difficult to hold or turn a standard steering wheel, there are simple adaptations that can help. For example, a steering wheel ball can be fitted to improve grip and give you greater control when steering.

Transfer Plate

A transfer plate is fitted to the side of the car seat and provides a smooth surface between the wheelchair and the car seat to help you with the transfer. Once you are in the vehicle and are comfortable, the transfer plate can simply be folded out of the way.

Adaptive Accelerators

If you have limited mobility in your legs or find push/pull hand controls take too much effort, an electronic accelerator may help, and there are a few different types available.

Electric Person Hoist

If you are a wheelchair user, another option for getting in and out of the car is via an electric person hoist, which physically lifts you into the car.

In order to identify which adaptations you require it may be a good idea for you to have a consultation at an independent Mobility Scheme Assessment Centre.

These centers are run by occupational therapists and technical specialists who can advise you on the vehicles and adaptations that best suit you. The Baylis Motability Scheme Specialist will then help you choose the right vehicle for you and confirm whether your adaptations are eligible under the Motability Scheme Managed Adaptations Programme. If this is the case, we will work with them to take care of the whole process on your behalf.
